Fri Aug 11, 2006 10:29 pm   I need some help getting my website setup.

For the life of me I can't figure out where to find directions on how to set up my website other than the videos. I have a problem hearing them on my computer because of hearing losses. Also, so far I haven't seen anything on the videos, just heard someone talking. I guess I don't know how to run the media programs.

Isn't there a set of written instructions some where on BYB that I could follow? I am getting very frustrated.

Also, if you see this Ryan, would you mind if I use the information from your website? I was hoping I could copy it like I did somebody else when I set up a GDI site.

Mybe someone could set up a short tutorial like Warren did several months ago on building a .WS site.

Thanks,

Dave

Sat Aug 12, 2006 1:11 am   Here you go . . .

Logon to the BYB back office and click on BYB Mini Website

Follow the direction (in RED) to set up your Mini Website, then click on 'Click here to login to Your Mini Site Controller

Logon with your account (byb11110 and password

Click Cpanel in the lower right box

Enter your username and password again

Click on the File Manager icon

Click the folder next to public_html (Your current folder at the top should show / public_html/

Click on Upload File(s)

Click Browse for each file to upload and select it from your hard drive

Check the box to overwrite existing files

Click the Upload button

That's it, visit http://yourname.bybweb.com to see your site.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now how to get the files to use
Find a team website you want to start with
Click 'View' and 'Source' to bring up the code in Notepad.
Click 'File' and 'Save As' to store it on your hard drive as index.html
Right click each graphic and save picture as to the same folder (the New Window graphic, the shadow at the bottom, and the photo to use as an example)
I use Arachnophilia 4.0 to edit with, but you can use any HTML editor
http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index_old.html
Open the index.html file
Click 'Tools' and 'Beautify HTML' to reformat the code
Find where it says <img alt="my photo" src="photo.jpg" . . .
Click on the Photo name (whatever it is) then right click and say OK, find your own photo you want to use on your hard drive (it should be in the same folder) and Open it. That automatically changes everything it needs to
Find the other Buddies name and change it as well as the phone number
Click 'Edit' then 'Find' and search for id= and change the ID to yours in two places
Click 'Tools' and 'Beautify' then 'Compress HTML' to change the formatting back
Click 'File' and 'Save' (or the black diskette) to save your changes
Load it to your web space as instructed above
That's it.
Now these are minimum instructions for beginners, if you know what you're doing go ahead and change the text where you want to. Just don't change anything between angle brackets unless you know what you're doing.
I strongly suggest you save a backup of the file in case you blow it.
Is that what you wanted Dave?
Thanks Warren,
That is exactly what I needed. Step by step instructions. I will print out your post to use and I will also copy it into notepad so I can pass it on to some one else when the time comes.
Thanks
Dave
Hi Warren,
Your instructions were right on the money as I knew they would be. Sometimes us old guys have too much data stored up on top and it confuses simple instructions.
My site is set up. I still have to get my mug shot on the picture.
The next thing I think I should do is put a page in for free stuff. Jeff sent me an email yesterday and said he would brand a copy for me. All I need to find out is how to add a page to http://newconcepts.bybweb.com.
Thanks again,
Dave
Sat Aug 12, 2006 1:59 pm   Ooops . . .
Hi Dave,
I fixed your link because you left off the web from bybweb, but I think you might have put your files in the wrong place.
When you load your site it needs to go in the public_html folder or it won't show up. Check it out.
As far as adding pages, it is very possible to do with a little HTML and there are tutorials all over the net. I like http://www.w3schools.com/
That said, keep in mind what the goal is with these pages. We want to show people how SIMPLE Bring Your Buddy is and if we get too complicated with our invitation, it may circumvent that.
It's hard enough for some people to get a single page loaded without trying to teach them multiple page techniques and as the team grows, we sure won't have time to do it for them all, will we?
There's nothing wrong with having another website somewhere that is as elaborate as we want and give them a link to it. In fact check this out: http://Squidoo.com/littleguy
Just thinking out loud,
Warren
I don't quite understand. What files are you talking about? I went to my site and clicked on the links and they took me to both the BYB signup page and the fun splash page. Teach me please
If I don't build pages for example: "one cent auction" or "get free stuff" where do I put information about them? It seems to me that it would be more effective to put a signature on emails or forums that sent people to .....newconcepts.bybweb/GetFreeStuff than to put my tracking URL there.
I'm just trying to study this thing out and get set up so I can email some people on my small list the right links to go to.
Dave
BTW, thanks for fixing the link. Was that 'oops' on my post or on my site?
Sat Aug 12, 2006 10:23 pm   Take a deep breath . . .
OK Dave,
Let's back up and go one step at a time.
Click this link: http://newconcepts.bybweb.com./
When I do all I see is an Index of your web space, no web page files.
Does it work for you?
You don't need any links on the website to give away the pdf reports, it's the pdf reports that bring them there so they should already have them.
If you tell someone about the report you have, ask them if you can email it to them. If you don't tell them first, they probably won't read it anyway.
I don't send people to my website until I think they're very close to signing up. I am finding that's the best way by far.
Remember, we don't need scores of people to sign up, just a couple a month if we all do it will break the bank.
When I click that link, I see the webpage. It looks very similar to Ryan's page changed to fit my information.
That's not what you see?
Ahhhh, so when you do what does it say in your address bar on your browser? Then right click the graphics and see if the properties point to the website or your local drive.
Like I said, all I see is the Index of your web space. A list of files and folders.
If anyone else sees this maybe they can check it for us.
I think I must be the dunce of the group. I thought the idea was to give people a direct link to go get the free stuff. How do I do that if I don't have a page that tells about it? Are you saying that we shouldn't give that information until they ask us because of our answers on Yahoo Answers or the posts we make in the forums? It seems to me that for those of us who are dumb bunnies, it's going to take months for us to get enough smarts to get people to search us out. I was just looking for what to put in my signature url. Not trying to be argumentative. I really thought I was "getting it", but now I'm confused again.
Well, I don't disagree with this. If I don't wise up quick enough, I'll hove some people in my group that I won't know what to do with.
Thanks for being so patient with me,
Dave
